The client requested the building of an estate on the hills of the lush mountainside by the beaches of Mal Pais, Costa Rica. At roughly 1.4 miles from the beach and approximately .5 miles in elevation from sea level the site was at the top and end of a ridge that overlooked the forest and an alluvial ravine. The plan was developed as a courtyard space that encompassed the ravine and later descended upon the mountainside to allocate the private program elements of the house in a lower and a higher level of the house, keeping the public ground level plane to be carried out throughout the whole house.
The entire courtyard space was surrounded by a covered walkway that would let light through its inner walls by means of a glass strip in several locations of the roof. The entire house then allowed for the entry of “planes of light” in both vertical and horizontal directions.
Following the lead of this light was also the entry of air and people across and cutting through the majority of the space.
